What is a log book service?

Log Book Servicing is a proactive approach to car maintenance where regular inspections and small fixes keep your vehicle running smoothly and efficiently to prevent small problems turning into major damage and issues which could otherwise be very costly to repair.

Every passenger car (and most commercial vehicles) should be issued with a “Log Book” by the manufacturer, which lays out the specified timing and agenda for your regular log book services. You should keep your log book in your glove box for reference and recording any details, but Hallam Auto Works can also refer to our database to get the required information if you've misplaced your book.

The schedule of the service will be a combination of both time and distance.

You may be tempted to delay your next log book service because your car is probably still driveable and it may not have reached BOTH the time and distance measures. While you obviously need to find availability in your budget and schedule, don't delay too long because wear and tear on the car will increase exponentially and could lead to damage which is many times more expensive than the log book service would have been.

What is included?

Every car is different and the agenda for each service changes according to the schedule, which is why each vehicle is issued with a log book.

Here are some examples of what can be included:

  • Change Oil
  • Check Coolant
  • Check Car Battery
  • Check Transmission Fluid
  • Check Brake Fluid
  • Check the Condition of the Air Filter
  • Check Power Steering Fluid
  • Check Spark Plugs
  • Check Turn Signals
  • Check Brake Lights
  • Check Heating System
  • Brake Check
  • Belt Check
  • Hose Check
  • Tyre Rotation
  • Coolant Sensor Check

Have more questions about your log book service?

Can I have my new car serviced at Hallam Auto Works without voiding my manufacturer's warranty?

Yes. Hallam Auto Works can carry out manufacturer-approved log book servicing on new vehicles while maintaining your new car warranty. We follow the manufacturer's service schedule, use quality parts and lubricants, and complete your service according to the required specifications. Your rights are protected under Australian Consumer Law.

What is included in a log book service?

A log book service is completed according to your vehicle manufacturer's recommended schedule. Depending on your vehicle's age, kilometres, and service interval, this may include:

  • Engine oil and filter replacement
  • Fluid level inspections and top-ups
  • Brake inspection
  • Tyre condition and pressure checks
  • Steering and suspension inspection
  • Battery testing
  • Drive belt inspection
  • Cooling system checks
  • Safety inspection
  • Diagnostic scanning where required
  • Resetting service reminders and updating your log book

Do I have to service my car at the dealership?

No. You are free to choose a qualified independent workshop such as Hallam Auto Works. Your vehicle can be serviced according to the manufacturer's specifications without needing to return to the dealership.

How often should I book a log book service?

Every manufacturer has different service intervals. Most vehicles require servicing every 10,000 to 15,000 kilometres or every 6 to 12 months, whichever comes first. Always follow the schedule listed in your owner's handbook.

What happens if I miss a scheduled service?

Delaying a scheduled service can lead to:

  • Increased engine wear
  • Reduced fuel efficiency
  • More expensive repairs
  • Shortened component life
  • Potential warranty issues if recommended servicing is repeatedly neglected

Booking your service on time helps keep your vehicle reliable and protects its long-term value.

Do you service all makes and models?

Yes. Hallam Auto Works services virtually all makes and models, including Australian, Japanese, Korean, European and American vehicles. Their experienced technicians are equipped to maintain both new and older vehicles

Will my log book be stamped?

Absolutely. Once your scheduled service has been completed, your log book will be updated and stamped, providing a complete service history that helps maintain your vehicle's resale value.

Why is a complete service history important?

A well-maintained service history:

  • Demonstrates the vehicle has been properly maintained
  • Helps maximise resale value
  • Provides confidence to future buyers
  • Makes it easier to identify previous maintenance and repairs
  • Assists with warranty claims where applicable

How long does a log book service take?

Most log book services are completed within a few hours. Larger scheduled services that require additional maintenance or replacement components may take longer. When you book with Hallam Auto Works, the team can provide an estimated completion time.

Can you tell me if my car needs repairs during the service?

Yes. If the technicians identify any worn or damaged components during your service, they will explain what they've found, discuss your options, and obtain your approval before carrying out any additional repairs.

Does servicing improve fuel economy?

Yes. Regular servicing helps your engine run efficiently by replacing old oil, maintaining filters, checking tyre pressures, and ensuring engine management systems are operating correctly. A properly maintained vehicle typically uses less fuel and performs more reliably.
